Built for British Columbia

Whistler metal roofing: a roof that cannot rust.

BC is a coastline, a rainforest, a snow belt and a fire zone, sometimes on the same drive. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each.

Salt air

Aluminum cannot rust

There is no iron in aluminum, so there is nothing to rust. It forms its own thin oxide layer, which re-forms if the surface is scratched. That is why it is the metal for oceanfront homes, island cabins and anywhere the wind carries salt.

Wildfire

Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly

Under ASTM E108 a fire classification belongs to an assembly, not a panel. On our roofs Class A is achieved with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, and the aluminum itself does not ignite. Ask us to quote the assembly if your home backs onto forest or grassland.

Reflectance

Reflectance, rated colour by colour

Most Alunar® colours are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC), which publishes each colour's solar reflectance (0.25 to 0.44 when new) and thermal emittance (0.83 to 0.86). Lighter and metallic colours reflect more. The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years.

Energy

Colour and summer heat

Lighter colours absorb less summer sun than dark ones. What that saves depends on climate, colour, insulation and attic ventilation, so we don't quote a figure.

Solar

The roof to put solar on

A solar array lasts 25 to 30 years. Put it on an asphalt roof and the panels often have to come off and go back on when the roof wears out underneath them. On an Interlock roof they come off at the end of their own life, not the roof's. Standing Seam takes clamp mounts with no holes drilled; the other profiles use mounting hardware made for metal roofing. At roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre the roof leaves more of the structure's capacity for the array, and your solar installer confirms the framing.

Wind

Locked on four sides

Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides, with no exposed fastener for a storm to work at. Wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.

Coastline: Province of British Columbia, Coastal Marine Strategy ↗ gives "more than 26,000 kilometres"; federal mapping gives 25,725 km. Product figures are the manufacturer's: interlockroofing.com ↗

    Why aluminum roofing, for Whistler

Heavy snow and a forested valley: what a Whistler roof is up against.

    Snowfall

Over four metres of snow a year

The Whistler station recorded an average of 418.7 cm of snowfall a year in the 1981–2010 climate normals. Metal sheds snow instead of holding it, which changes where it lands. We plan snow guards over entries, decks, hot tubs and parking at the estimate.

    Wildfire

A resort the municipality calls high risk

The Resort Municipality of Whistler states plainly that Whistler is at high risk of wildfires. Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, on our roofs, and aluminum does not ignite. No roof is fireproof, and embers still reach gutters and vents, so we look at those details with you.

    Season

    Booked around the snow

When fire danger is high or extreme, the municipality halts some high-risk construction within 10 metres of forest unless a permit covers it, and winter brings its own limits. We set the install date with you so the roof goes on in a workable window.

    Weight

    Light on the frame

Interlock® panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per m², a fraction of the cedar shake or concrete tile they often replace. That leaves the frame carrying snow, not roofing. Interlock® Shake and Interlock® Slate give a chalet or timber-frame house the same look in heavy-gauge aluminum.

    Recycled

    Up to 95% recycled aluminum

And the last tear-off your house is likely to need.

    Straight answers

Aluminum shingles in Whistler: questions, answered.

    All of our answers ↗

    Which communities does whistlerroofing.ca cover?

The Resort Municipality of Whistler, from Function Junction and Cheakamus Crossing through Whistler Creekside, Alta Vista and the Village to Alpine Meadows and Emerald Estates. The rest of the Sea-to-Sky corridor is covered at roofbc.com.

Do you install metal shingles and aluminum shingles in Whistler?

Yes: Interlock® Slate, Interlock® Cedar Shingle, Interlock® Shake, Interlock® Mediterranean Tile, Interlock® Standing Seam and solid copper. Each needs a roof slope of at least 3/12. We replace roofs; we don't patch them or install asphalt.

How does a metal roof cope with Whistler snow?

The Whistler station averaged 418.7 cm of snowfall a year (1981–2010 normals). A metal roof lets snow slide, so we plan snow guards at the estimate. Ice damming is excluded from the warranty, so we also talk through attic ventilation and insulation with you.

Do I need a building permit to replace my roof in Whistler?

Permits are issued by the Resort Municipality of Whistler Building Department. Its building page lists minor repairs among work that usually needs no permit but doesn't mention roofing, and strata and development permit conditions can apply. We confirm the requirements for your address before the job is booked.

How much does a metal roof cost in Whistler?

See our metal roof cost page for price ranges by profile from our BC contracts. Prices vary job to job with the structure of the roof and other conditions, so treat them as a rough guide only. An accurate price needs a roof consultation, on Zoom or in your home.

What does "Whistler's Best Roof®" mean?

Best Roof® is a registered trademark of I.E.L. Manufacturing Ltd. It names the Interlock® aluminum roof, so "Whistler's Best Roof®" is that roof installed on a Whistler home by our BC company. It is a brand name, not a ranking.
